Home Depot’s Price Match Policy

All you need to know and How to Maximize Your Savings

Home Depot is one of the largest retailers for home improvement and DIY repairs. Looking to fix up your home, paint that spare room, or make those repairs over the weekend? Then you can probably be found loading your cart up at Home Depot. However, what happens if you find everything you need except that ride-on mower was cheaper at Lowe’s—do you have to suck up that loss or make two trips just to get your next project finished? This is where the Home Depot price match policy is your ticket for one-stop shopping.

Let’s take a look at the Home Depot price match policy, what they exclude, how making purchases with your credit card can get you reimbursed, and how Sift can automate the process effortlessly.

The Home Depot Price Match – How Does It Work?

Here’s how the Home Depot Price Match (known as the “Low Price Guarantee”) works:

At the time of purchase, if you find a current lower price on an identical, in-stock item from any local retailer, Home Depot will match the price and beat it by 10% at the point-of-sale. For price-matching online purchases, the price of the item(s) plus the shipping cost must be lower than what Home Depot offers—they almost must be able to deliver to the customer’s location. To receive the 10% price match for in-store purchases at Home Depot, you will need to bring the ad, printout or photo with you to the register for validation.

Exclusions to the Home Depot Price Match Guarantee

There are a number of exclusions to what qualifies for an eligible item under the Home Depot price match. The following are ineligible:

  • Online retailers (including non-local com)
  • Custom or special order products from a competitor
  • Volume or wholesale discount pricing offered by competitors
  • Items sold via a third-party or discount site
  • Competitor-bid and auctions-site pricing (i.e. eBay)
  • Open-box merchandise
  • Reconditioned items,
  • Refurbished
  • Previously-discounted products
  • Competitor pricing for professional services (i.e. installation, labor)
  • Sales tax is excluded
  • Rebates
  • Free offers
  • One-time-only promotions (including bundled offers)
  • Advertised pricing from a competitor based on typographical error or misprint
  • Pricing from membership-based retail wholesalers (i.e. Costco)
  • Price matching on financed offers or credit terms

Get money back if the prices drop after the purchase

While the Home Depot’s price match policy is good, it doesn’t account for purchases you make after the fact. Is there anything you can do as a consumer if you saw a price drop just a week or more after plunking down your cash?

The answer is yes—Lot of the retailers offer a price adjustment policy up to 30 days. If something you’ve already purchased goes on sale or you find it for a lower price elsewhere, you can bring your receipt back in, and the store will refund you the difference.  Furthermore if you use a credit card for your purchases at Home Depot, you are more than likely covered by a credit card perk called “price protection”. Simply put, if the price drops within a certain amount of time (typically 30 – 60 days) after your purchase, your credit issuer will give you a refund for the difference. However, you will have to file a claim or preregister to qualify for this perk. (For more information on price protection and how each credit issuer works, click here. )
